The investment website, Seeking Alpha.com, has some interesting perspectives on Allegiant Air.  The website says the company operates a business model much different from the other airlines.  The company focuses on serving small markets on routes where it faces little or no competition as well as on generating ancillary revenue, such as from booking seat selections and charging baggage fees as well as by selling air with hotel rooms and car rentals as a complete travel package.

According to this report, another key aspect to its business strategy is the company’s heavy reliance on older MD-80 series aircraft.  This drastically lowers Allegiant’s capital expenses, as many other airlines are eager to sell its used MD-80 aircraft at very low prices.  On the other hand, these planes have a significantly higher fuel consumption rate than comparable later model aircraft.   

As a result of its business model, Allegiant tends to outperform peers when the economy is particularly weak and when fuel costs tend to be low.  On the other hand, the company tends to suffer more than other airlines when fuel prices spike.

Allegiant is adding seats on each of its MD-80 series aircraft.  By moving from 150 to 166 seats, the airline hopes to increase the revenue from each flight while spreading costs over more seats. The downside is that passengers will have less legroom. 

Another development which may negatively impact Allegiant is the FAA new rules requiring carriers to include all fees and taxes on the flight price being advertised.  Allegiant was using an “unbundled” pricing approach will did not initially include charges for seat assignments and for booking on an online basis, in addition to taxes and government fees.  Some suggested that this type of pricing amounted to a “bait and switch” practice.  Some are concluding that the requirement for upfront pricing and having more crowded seats may put a crimp on Allegiant’s business model going forward.

Allegiant is now in the process of adding somewhat more fuel efficient Boeing 757 aircraft, which could potentially support service to Hawaii.  However, the company has not made any updates about plans to offer Hawaii flights since it made an official announcement back in December of 2010.  Industry experts are suggesting that Allegiant may be re-thinking its strategy to offer Hawaii flights since Southwest could potentially enter the market for flights to Hawaii in addition to being a carrier of Hawaii inter island flights. 

No one seems to be offering cheap Hawaii airfare now.  I am trying to spend some time in Hawaii for the holidays and the rates are pretty high right now.  I guess flight prices are going to be high during Christmas or New Year wherever you fly.  I was hoping flying to Hawaii would be a little different but I guess it isn’t.  So that being the case, I wonder if anyone out there has any ideas for getting cheap Hawaii airfare during the holiday season.  Maybe now is the time to seek out professional help and to contact a travel agent for some advice.
